Elaf from Dubai: Three new studies have raised concerns that the immune response caused by infection or vaccination may be less effective in protecting against the version of the mutated Corona that appeared in South Africa.
A report published by Al-Hurra website says that according to studies published by the American Wall Street Journal, the results of laboratory experiments that focus on the body’s immune response reinforce the need to develop vaccines to counter the virus.
A fourth study conducted by scientists from Pfizer and Biontech showed that their vaccine succeeded in fighting the mutated Corona virus that was discovered in Britain, but this study did not include the mutated strain in South Africa.
And after more than a year since the spread of the epidemic, the discovery of new variants may make the virus more contagious, and prompt researchers to re-study the virus.
The researchers expressed several concerns, including that new strains appear in countries that acquired a large proportion of their citizens an immune response to the previous variants after infection with Corona.
And if this is confirmed through additional research, the results of the studies indicate that victory in the global battle against Corona requires frequent vaccinations and updates to existing vaccines, such as what is done with influenza vaccines every year.
“We are learning how our bodies force the virus to change,” said Jinal Behman, lead medical scientist at the National Institute of Infectious Diseases in Johannesburg and co-author of a study on the mutated virus in South Africa.
In “Al-Hurra”, the studies included people who had contracted corona or took the vaccine, and the researchers said that the tests examined the response of some antibodies, including the human immune system and also the so-called “T cells” and blood cells that help attack the virus and other types of cells.
In two of the studies, the researchers found that the antibodies of people with corona were weak in the face of the mutated corona that resisted these bodies.
