A large number of companies in Germany expect the use of artificial intelligence to have a noticeable impact on the economy and society. These are the results of a recent Bitkom survey.

Company on the subject

In a Bitkom survey, 603 German companies with at least 20 employees were asked about artificial intelligence.

Almost eight out of ten German companies are already assuming that artificial intelligence will noticeably change the economy and society by 2030 at the latest. Every eleventh company expects this in the coming year.

22 percent of companies expect these changes in two to five years, 33 percent in six to ten years. 15 percent of all companies are of the opinion that these changes have already occurred. None of the companies surveyed assume that AI will bypass the economy and society without a trace.

Use the opportunities offered by AI

We already encounter AI in many aspects of our everyday life, but also in industry and science. “AI applications support people. For example in quality control in industry or checking X-ray images in medicine, ”says Bitkom President Achim Berg. “AI offers huge opportunities. We should not hide these opportunities by excessive special regulation. “

The Bitkom Association also calls on politicians to: So that German companies do not fall behind when it comes to AI, they now have to act with a sense of proportion when it comes to laws and rules. More than half of all companies surveyed (54%) already see themselves as laggards when it comes to artificial intelligence. 22 percent consider themselves more of a latecomer. While 16 percent of the companies see themselves more as pioneers, only 5 percent are of the opinion that they are “clearly ahead” in the field of AI.

The basis for the survey was a total of 603 companies with 20 or more employees in Germany from February to the end of March 2021. The survey was carried out by telephone by Bitkom Research.
