Dresden (dpa / sn) – The German mobile phone companies are accelerating the expansion of the new 5G high-speed network in Saxony. As Deutsche Telekom announced on request, the company has already put more than 700 5G locations into operation in the Free State, and 400 more are to be built in the next few years.
At Vodafone Germany, the first 225 stations in Saxony work with 5G technology. 54 of them are equipped with so-called 5G standalone technology, it said. These have antennas that are only intended for 5G use. This allows transmission speeds of up to 1 gigabit per second. At most locations, however, the antennas are still used jointly by 5G and its predecessor LTE (4G). The maximum transmission speed is only about half as high. By mid-2022, Vodafone intends to commission a further 210 5G projects.
As Vodafone emphasized, as far as possible all populated areas and the main traffic routes in Saxony should be connected to the 5G network, especially with the existing infrastructure, the 1590 stations on masts, observation towers and church towers as well as the roofs of town halls, office buildings or town halls. Almost no additional stations should be added.
The mobile operator Telefónica O2 wants to supply all of Saxony with a 5G network by the end of 2025. The first locations would be set up in Leipzig and Dresden this year, said the spokesman for Telefónica Germany, Florian Streicher. Other cities and municipalities are to follow. Saxony is a focus of the nationwide network expansion.
Telefónica O2 was initially launched in autumn 2020 in the five largest German cities, in Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Cologne and Frankfurt and plans to “rapidly” expand 5G this year, as it was said.
