Commuters: This is how many people travel to work in Hamburg every day

Crowds on the tracks at the main station and long traffic jams in front of the Elbe tunnel show it: Hundreds of thousands of residents of the surrounding area commute to work in Hamburg – and the number is growing faster than anywhere else.

After Munich and Frankfurt, Hamburg is the German city with the strongest attraction for workers from the surrounding area. Last year, 391,900 people in social security-covered employment commuted to work in the Hanseatic city, according to the Federal Institute for Research on Building, Urban Affairs and Spatial Development (BBSR) in Bonn. Berlin has slightly fewer commuters, with 391,200 employees from the surrounding area.

Increase in commuters in Hamburg is strongest

After the Corona year of 2022 and with the increase in the number of employed people, the number of commuters rose by 140,000 across Germany in 2023. The largest increase in commuters was in Hamburg with an increase of 13,200. In Munich (10,900), Berlin (8,800) and Düsseldorf (8,300), the number of commuters grew less sharply. Nationwide, around 20.5 million people commute between their home and work. For 7.1 million employed people, the distance from home to work is even more than 30 kilometers. However, the analysis does not reveal whether they have to travel this distance every day or whether they work a lot from home.
