Liverpool FC football players won the first trophy of the season. Thanks to a 3:1 triumph in Saturday’s FA Community Shield match over Manchester City, London’s Arsenal equaled the number of titles from this competition in the historical tables. Both have 16 trophies. Coach Jürgen Klopp’s men decided on their victory in the last quarter of the match.

At 1:1, the VAR system revealed the hand of Ruben Dias after Darwin Nunez’s header in the penalty area, and Mohamed Salah made no mistake from the penalty spot in the 83rd minute. The successful evening of “The Reds” ended in added time with an accurate header by Nunez, for whom it was the first goal since arriving at Anfield.

“I was satisfied with the selection of the starting line-up and with the performance at the beginning of the match. We saw quality football, we managed to use important spaces and keep City away from our goal. We had better and worse moments during the match, but both teams fought really hard.” Klopp told Liverpool’s official website.

He also evaluated the performance of the pre-season reinforcement, the Uruguayan footballer Nunez. He came from Benfica Lisbon before the season: “He was really good, but it is clear that he will improve with time. We are patient with him because we know that he can show the right decisions in the match. I liked his performance today and his contribution to the team”.

Right back Trent Alexander-Arnold, who opened the score of the match in the 21st minute, also praised his new teammate: “He won a penalty, scored a goal, he was very lively. They bought him to score goals. He showed that he knows. He is a young player who is willing to learn. He has good relations with the boys in the team.”

The “Citizens” failed in their second FA Community Shield final in a row. Last year they were not enough for Leicester. Despite the loss, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola was proud of his players for their efforts.

“They had a good start to the match when they were better in the first 15-20 minutes. In the second half we managed to score and we played our football. We created enough chances to score a goal, but we were not effective. We have two weeks and a few days from the beginning of the preparation for the new season. We gave everything to the match, but we have to improve. We need to train for a month to get in shape and we will definitely do it.” he stated for the official site.

At the end of the match, Erling Haaland, City’s pre-season reinforcement, had a great chance, but he only hit the crossbar from close range. “Despite the fact that he didn’t succeed, he showed his qualities. We have a long season ahead of us and I am convinced that he will help us in it.” said Guardiola to the Norwegian attacker.
