Community service for sleeping police officers at Amsterdam Jewish school

The court in Arnhem has sentenced two military police officers to 40 hours of community service because they were not alert when guarding a Jewish school in Amsterdam. The judge called them “grossly negligent”. The penalty is equal to the requirement of the Public Prosecution Service.

The two men were acquitted of intent. They had to guard the Orthodox Jewish school community Cheider in Amsterdam, but were sleeping or looking at their telephones during their shift. The men from Poortugaal and Utrecht were caught by colleagues and fired shortly afterwards.

The Amsterdam school community has been under strict security for years because of terrorist threats.
