- EDC has launched a so-called temporary solution that enables electricity sharing
- The last condition for the start of EDC was the approval of its Order by the Energy Regulatory Office
- Full operation, which will expand EDC’s aggregation, accumulation and flexibility activities and services, is expected in the second half of 2026
The Electricity Data Center (EDC) launched today and launched the registration option, which is a necessary first step to sharing electricity under the new community energy system. It offers customers new options for using self-produced electricity more efficiently.
Sharing electricity will give customers the opportunity to strengthen their energy self-sufficiency. It will also contribute to better environmental protection thanks to higher use of self-produced electricity and will support the further development of renewable energy sources. Changing the consumption behavior of customers associated with electricity sharing is also a way to reduce one’s own energy expenses.
“The start of electricity sharing is the first major milestone in our efforts to modernize the Czech energy industry. It will be implemented by our law, which is one of the most modern in Europe, and I believe it will open up community energy to the widest possible public.” stated the Minister of Industry and Trade Jozef Síkela and added: “Electricity sharing is followed by another amendment to the Energy Act, which modernizes the rules of the energy market and introduces new concepts such as accumulation, aggregation and flexibility. During the second half of 2026, together with the expansion of the EDC functionality, this will offer additional opportunities to use renewable energy sources even more efficiently. Accumulation and flexibility will enable people and businesses to better manage their consumption.”
Interested parties from households, municipalities and companies can participate in community energy, either in the simpler mode of active customer, which allows the sharing of electricity between up to eleven transfer points across the territory of the Czech Republic, or as part of the energy community, which allows up to a thousand transfer points places in the contiguous territory of the administrative districts of no more than three municipalities with extended jurisdiction or in the territory of the capital city of Prague.
“We are going through an extremely difficult period. The whole team gave their best to enable community energy to function in record time. Thank you to everyone who participated in making EDC operational,” said Petr Kusý, chairman of the board of EDC.
Registration is carried out by the EDC as part of a three-step process. The first one is connected to registration on the portal www.edc-cr.cz and with confirmation of the participant’s e-mail verification. The second involves filling out an application for a contract for access to the EDC on this portal, and the third ends with its signature. “We will inform the applicant about the conclusion of the contract through a message sent no later than twenty days after receiving the application. We complied with the comments when approving the EDC Order and shortened this period from the originally considered thirty to a maximum of twenty days. This is certainly good news for all those interested in sharing.” added P. Kusý.
At the same time as preparing IT systems, EDC also focused on building extensive communication support for all those interested in sharing electricity. A number of video tutorials and manuals on how to register are also available on the website. “Since the beginning of July, our call center on the phone number 800 720 204 has solved over a thousand phone calls. The operators spent more than 80 hours explaining all the details,” recalled P. Kusý.
EDC currently operates in a so-called temporary solution. This enables the sharing of electricity within community energy between active customers, electricity producers and within energy communities. In the second half of 2026, it is expected to start full operation, which will offer new possibilities for sharing electricity and at the same time expand the functions of EDC to other areas of modern energy, such as accumulation, flexibility or aggregation. Adjusting consumption according to the price of electricity on the market or offering a flexibility aggregation service to ensure the balance of the transmission system in the future will allow people and companies to further reduce their electricity bills.
“The EDC Order was legally approved this morning. With its acceptance, the EDC was able to start its activities and can accept applications from those interested in sharing electricity. This concluded a demanding process, which included not only the approval of the EDC Order, but above all the fundamental amendments to several decrees or price decisions. At the same time, we had to do everything from the beginning of the year following the changes in the Energy Act in order to enable the real functioning of community energy as soon as possible.” concluded Stanislav Trávníček, Chairman of the Council of the Energy Regulatory Office.
A general condition for sharing electricity is the installation of continuous electricity meters at all consumption points. This exchange is legally free for all those interested in sharing electricity and is carried out by the locally relevant distributor. The distribution company has three months for the exchange.
