With games, music and other activities, the community of Westchester Square, in The Bronx, received school supplies a few days before the start of the school year.
“It helps me a lot because it’s something that parents don’t have to buy for their children when they go back to school,” said neighbor Carolina.
The annual event is organized by the Westchester Square Business Improvement District in conjunction with the New York Police Department. They say that each year they bring more resources because the community continues to grow.
“It takes a lot of time and preparation but we are pleased to work together to keep the community together,” said Westchester Square Business Improvement District Director Yasmin Cruz.
This year, during the event they also celebrated the naming of the street La Jara Band, in honor of the contributions of the Latin music orchestra made up of NYPD officers.
“We are here extremely proud, more than happy proud, ten years of hard work La Jara band (orchestra)”, said Captain Alexander Cedillo, Founder La Jara Band NYPD.
The Jara band plays merengue, salsa and other tropical rhythms in different Latino communities across the country. They make these presentations voluntarily, after fulfilling their work to protect citizens, connecting with communities through their love for music.
“A blessing, thank you very much to all of New York, many thanks to the entire world for always being with us, we love you very much, Captain Cedillo, we love you,” added Cedillo.
