Use it, or lose it. That was the motto this week as the Dunkirk Common Council approved reappropriation of unused Community Block Development Grant (CDBG) funds.
“There is a timeliness test and they expire after a certain period,” reported Vince DeJoy, city planning and development director, about the annual federal program.
DeJoy thanked the city’s CDBG coordinator, Nicole Clift, for working to find uses for funds the city would otherwise lose.
The reallocations are as follows:
— $70,000 for a Chautauqua Home Improvement and Rehabilitation Corp. rehabilitation and resale of a home.
— $32,137 to help fund work at Washington Park. Clift said at an earlier committee meeting that officials want to put in a spray pad, renovate a drinking fountain and improve electrical service with the funds. On Monday, DeJoy mentioned repair and replacement of walkways and the addition of more lighting.
— $21,179 for improvements at the Dunkirk Senior Center. DeJoy said CDBG-funded window replacement at the center came in under budget, so the money will be used to add walkways near the pavilions.
— $20,745 for a “Wright Park Safe Access Walkways” project to “repair, replace, create and add solar lights to paved walkways that access Wright Park and connect the southern neighborhood to the park,” as the council resolution put it.
City officials are also considering adding a walkway down an unopened portion of Pine Street to connect that road to the park.
