Communication Satellites: Past, Present, and Later

Launch Vehicle Ariane 5 VA 235 as it starts to glide carrying the Telkom 3S Satellite from the Guiana Space Center, Kourou, French Guiana, Tuesday (14/2).

The first private communications satellite Telstar 1 was launched into space on July 10, 1962. Initially, communication satellites were widely used for broadcasting and telecommunications over long distances, across islands and across continents. Now with the development of digital technology, communication satellites are widely used to create connectivity via the internet.

60 years ago, the Telstar 1 satellite was launched using a Delta rocket from Cape Canaveral, Florida, United States (US). The spherical-shaped satellite with a diameter of 90 centimeters is placed in orbit at an altitude of between 948 kilometers (km) to 5,651.7 km from the Earth’s surface. The satellite takes 2.5 hours to circle the Earth once.
