Have you ever felt rushed after being in the hospital for just a few hours for an operation? Did you feel like you were left in the emergency room waiting room? Rest assured, caregivers are doing all they can for the benefit of patients.
Particularly exposed and exhausted at this time, hospital staff must constantly arbitrate for the treatment of patients, and all the more so in the midst of a health crisis. After this difficult year, their dedication is well established and many of us show them our gratitude by applauding them every evening at 8 p.m. during the first confinement.
And yet, as a patient, we sometimes get annoyed, to express our incomprehension when the machine seizes up or that we do not understand certain elements in our support.
To pay tribute to caregivers, Tiphaine and Denis Chauchat, authors of the book Very patient caregivers, are the guests ofÉglantine Éméyé in It’s already tomorrow.
The outpatient is not a kick to the buttocks, we do not send the patient.
It can happen that we wonder about the merits of outpatient surgery: is it reasonable to go in in the morning and go out in the evening after having undergone an operation? Wouldn’t it be more serious to stay under observation for a few days? Think again ! The testimony of a doctor questioned by the guests is formal: the patients are better prepared for a short operation, they are given fewer drugs which are less burdensome, they go to the operating room standing up and are on their feet faster. Being bedridden, one has the impression of being weak and even sicker while in an outpatient setting – when possible of course -, we stay active and therefore we heal better.
Communication: one of the keys to a successful hospitalization
For example, did you know that one of the first operations to be treated on an outpatient basis was cataract? Some time ago this required several days of hospitalization compared to a few hours today.
It’s part of the healing to understand what’s going on
Why don’t we say it more then? Indeed, communication on the part of the caregiver plays an important part in the recovery of the patient. : the better informed we are, the better we go up the slope. So if you are in doubt about your hospital bed, do not hesitate to ask all your questions.
