Communal Violence in Manipur: 80-Year-Old Woman Locked Inside House and Set on Fire

Imphal: After the video of two women being stripped and sexually assaulted in a public place, more details of the communal violence in Manipur are coming out. The news is now coming out that an 80-year-old woman was locked inside her house and set on fire.

NDTV reported that the shocking incident took place in Serovu village of Kakching district. Eighty-year-old Ibethombi was brutally murdered. Late freedom fighter S. Ibethombi’s husband is Churachand Singh.

The incident took place on the night of May 28 when the two factions clashed with gunfire. The old woman who was inside the house was locked from outside and the assailants set fire to the house and killed her. Her grandson Premkanta said that the house caught fire in no time and Ibethombi could not be saved.

Premkanta stated that when the assailants surrounded the house, the grandmother told them to run away. Grandmother could not escape due to her old age. The assailants fired continuously at the house. Premkanta said that while trying to rescue her grandmother when the house caught fire, she was seriously injured in her arms and thigh by the gunshots of the assailants and narrowly escaped death.

The conflict between the Kuki sect and the Meiti sect of Manipur started from the month of May. The incident took place on May 4 when young women belonging to the Kuki community were stripped naked and sexually assaulted. After the video of this came out the other day, there was a huge protest across the country. Following this, many news of brutal murders and gang-rapes in Manipur came out.
