commotion! China-Russia Military ‘United’ in the Sea of Japan, What’s Up?

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The Chinese and Russian navies reportedly held a joint exercise on Thursday (14/10/2021). The exercise was held in Russian territorial waters around the Sea of Japan.

Citing China’s official state media Global Times, In the exercise, dubbed Naval Interaction, Beijing fielded several frigates and warplanes. These include the advanced frigate 055 Nanchang, 052D Kunming, Type 054A Binzhou and Liuzhou frigates, and Type 903A comprehensive supply ship Dongpinghu.

With the composition of the fleet, this is the first time China has brought a fleet weighing more than 10 thousand tons to overseas exercises. On the other hand, the Russians reportedly brought along a fleet of anti-submarine warships, submarines, frigates, and fighter aircraft.

“During the exercise, the Chinese and Russian navies will practice communication, sea mine countermeasures, air defense, direct fire at maritime targets, joint maneuvers and joint anti-submarine missions,” the Chinese navy said, quoted Friday (15/10/2021). ).

Exercises between the two countries have been carried out several times. Last August, the two of them also carried out an exercise called The Zapad/Interaction-2021 in the NingxiaHui autonomous region, China.

The exercise also reportedly involved several types of aircraft, artillery and armored equipment. Meanwhile, the Naval Interaction exercise this time was carried out when rivals China and Russia, the United States (US), held exercises in the Bay of Bengal with India, Australia and Japan.

Some analysts think that the drills between Russia and China are carried out to demonstrate the military capabilities of the two. This is likely addressed to the US and its allies who are considered to often interfere with the interests of Beijing and Moscow.

“New regional security organizations such as the Quad and AUKUS pose a serious threat to China and Russia, and joint exercises between the two countries will contribute to regional peace and stability,” said Song Zhongping, a China military expert.
