The Australian state of Victoria will host the 2026 Commonwealth Games, which take place every four years.
This was announced by the regional government on Tuesday. All competitions are to be held outside of Victoria’s capital Melbourne.
Daniel Andrews, Prime Minister of Victoria, thanked the organizers for their trust. The Games are to be held at four regional centers in Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo and Gippsland, each with its own athletes’ village. This plan is “a little riskier” than the usual staging “in a big city,” Andrews said.
The last Commonwealth Games venue was Australia’s Gold Coast in 2018, and in 2022 the games will take place in Birmingham, England (July 28 to August 8).
The athletes compete against each other in most Olympic disciplines. There are also some sports that are widespread in the Commonwealth countries, such as cricket.
Established in 1931, the Commonwealth is a loose association of sovereign states formed primarily of Great Britain and its former colonies. There are currently 54 members.
