PRESMEDIA.ID, Jakarta – High cholesterol can increase the risk of heart attack, stroke and peripheral artery disease. However, many people are not aware of high cholesterol levels because this disease does not have typical symptoms.
Here are some signs of high cholesterol in the feet that you need to pay attention to, quoted by Tribratanews, Wednesday (13/9/2023):
Foot Pain
Pain in the legs is a symptom that often occurs due to high cholesterol. This pain occurs when the arteries are blocked by cholesterol, blocking blood flow to the legs.
Pain can appear in various parts of the leg, including the calf. Usually, this condition appears after physical activity such as walking or climbing stairs.
Cold Feet
High cholesterol can make your feet feel cold, even in hot weather. Normally, blood flow helps keep the feet warm. However, if the arteries are blocked by cholesterol and fat, the body will have difficulty flowing blood to the legs, making them colder.
Wounds Difficult to Heal
If you often have difficulty healing minor wounds on your feet, this could be a sign of high cholesterol. Minor wounds that are difficult to heal are often related to poor blood circulation, which can be caused by high cholesterol levels in the body.
Cramps at Night
Cramps at night can attack parts of the foot such as the heels, soles of the feet, and even the toes. To reduce pain, you can let your legs hang down, letting gravity help blood flow to the tips of your feet.
Changes in Skin Color
Disturbed blood flow can also result in changes in skin color on the feet and nails. This occurs because the cells in the feet lack oxygen and other components due to impaired blood flow.
On the skin, yellowish deposits may appear around the bottom of the feet, and the nails may become thick or change shape.
Keep in mind that these symptoms may be a sign of various health conditions, including high cholesterol.
If you experience drastic changes in the condition of your feet or are concerned about additional symptoms, consult a medical professional immediately for proper diagnosis and treatment.
