Common heartburn drug linked to a higher risk of 7 cancers

Al-Marsad Journal: A study revealed that ranitidine can not only be an effective ointment for acid reflux and heartburn, but it can also be used to prevent and treat stomach ulcers.

According to the information received, patients were told to take one tablet with a glass of water for 15-60 minutes before eating foods or drinks that cause heartburn.

US scientists raised their concern about Zantac for the first time three years ago after a study of commercially available samples of the drug showed that they contained “extremely high levels” of a chemical called dimethylnitrosamine (NDMA).

The study reported significantly higher relative reporting rates for cancers of the pharynx, esophagus, stomach, colorectal, and pancreas.

Ranitidine’s ability to break down into dimethylnitrosamine over time has been raised with the Food and Drug Administration, with experts pointing out that this risk is particularly high if the drug is stored in warm, humid conditions, according to the Express.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a safe recall of all ranitidine products, which also prompted the Medicines and Health Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) to issue a warning to all healthcare professionals and retailers to stop supplying ranitidine.
