Committee 68 recognizes public apology offered by Sheinbaum

Mexico City. Members of the Committee 68 for Democratic Liberties, made up of survivors and relatives of victims of the Tlatelolco massacre, in 1968, recognized the public apology and the decree through which President Claudia Sheinbaum politically admits that the acts of violence perpetrated 56 years ago ” “They constituted a crime against humanity,” but they asked that this be translated into concrete actions against those responsible.

Félix Hernández Gamundi, one of the historical leaders of the student movement of ’68, said that the apology is welcome “and personally I assume it as an expression of will to advance justice.”

At the central rally, in front of the National Palace, he stated that this commemoration is “special” due to President Sheinbaum’s statement and the public apology “that we have to interpret for all the people of Mexico and for all the organized movements that have suffered repression.” and persecution at different times. “It should be that apology for all of them.”

He said that although it is not the first recognition, since there is a sign on the walls of honor of most of the state congresses and in the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate, it is “welcome.”

In front of students from various universities in the country, as well as rural normal students and indigenous, union and popular organizations, Gamundi highlighted that the decree published this afternoon in the Official Gazette of the Federation establishes that the State is committed to non-repetition and that “The space and the paths must be opened for the action of justice. This is what we have been demanding for more than 50 years.”

After the central statement, the protesters observed a minute of silence for former leaders who have died over the course of more than five decades, such as Roberta Avendaño, The Aunt; Raúl Álvarez Garín and Mario Álvarez Cartagena.

While the rally was taking place, a group of hooded men vandalized the Government building of Mexico City, setting the doors on fire. Meanwhile, the organizers of the march called not to fall into provocations.

In that building, which also had damage to the glass of its doors, and in the Old Town Hall Palace, dozens of grenadiers were deployed to protect the facilities, while the members of the black bloc threw stones, sticks and Molotov cocktails.

The security elements formed containment barriers with their shields and at times activated fire extinguishers to generate clouds of smoke and disperse the protesters.

There were different moments when the hooded people confronted the Mexico City police; The attempt lasted around 25 minutes.
