Commissioner Zeeland on naval barracks: the government has deceived us

Polman expressed his anger this morning in the Buitenhof program. According to him, agreements were made with the Ministry of Defense until last week about the arrival of the barracks. Secretary of State Visser has signaled that the move to Vlissingen would not continue for a long time dismissed as ‘rumors’.

Polman, in his own words, asked Visser whether he was looking for alternative locations. During a meeting between Defense and Zeeland administrators last Tuesday, Visser continued to ‘turn around the hot mush’ for a long time, before giving clarity.

Compensation

“We Zeelanders are tidy, honest and straightforward. Politics must take responsibility for this, but must also consult themselves: how do we deal with Zeeland?”, Says Polman at Buitenhof. “We expect to be compensated in a way in which Zeeland benefits the same as with the intended arrival of the naval barracks.”

In 2012 it was decided to move the naval barracks from Doorn to Vlissingen. That caused a lot of resistance among the Marines. Friday morning it was announced that it would be Nieuw Milligen in Gelderland.

Image damage for Zeeland

Polman spoke in a press conference of millions of euros in image damage for Zeeland. Polman came back to this in Buitenhof this morning. “If you treat each other like this, that means something for the trust between the government and the region. The government also simply needs the regions.” Polman cited the cooperation between provinces and the government as an example to solve nitrogen and climate problems.

According to Polman, the cabinet has appointed Minister Raymond Knops of the Interior to ensure that Zeeland is compensated. “The government says: we cannot entrust this to the State Secretary. That is why they have appointed the Minister of the Interior as coordinator.”
