Commissioner Adolfo Carrión Reports Nearly 28,000 New Homes Built in NYC in 2023, Addresses Affordable Housing Crisis

Nearly 28,000 new homes were built in New York City in 2023 and nearly 8,000 were built in the Bronx. This was stated by Adolfo Carrión, Commissioner of the Department of Urban Housing Development.

In conversation with Univision 41, he acknowledged that “the most important crisis” facing the Big Apple is access to affordable housing.

“There are people who for decades have been looking for economic opportunities for their families, they come here, they start working, but it is extremely difficult for them to stay in this city and create a future,” he analyzed.

The Bronx offers housing with rent of up to $495 a month

Adolfo Carrión reported that there is currently a housing auction in The Bronx and specified that, for a single person, the monthly rent could be $495 dollars. “That’s a dream,” he added.

“Last year we produced 8,000 homes in the Bronx,” the commissioner reiterated. He also indicated that to apply for the house auction you must enter the website housingconnect.nyc.govopen an account and complete the form.

Carrión highlighted that they maintain an “aggressive production” of housing, with the aim of fulfilling the commitment imposed by Mayor Eric Adams. “Last year was a record and we are going to continue,” he said.

During 2023, housing rent in The Bronx increased 7.91%, while the average rent was $2,391 dollars, making it the second county with the highest increase.
