Commission to investigate storm on US Capitol | Currently America | DW

The storming of the seat of the American Congress on January 6th in Washington had caused horror far beyond the country’s borders. Almost six weeks later, the ruling Democrats now want an independent commission to scrutinize what is happening. The chairman of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, explained in a letter to the MPs that the panel must carefully review the background and consequences of the “domestic terrorist attack” and the actions of all security forces involved. The commission is to act in a similar way to that which was set up by Congress after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

The Democratic advance comes two days after the impeachment trial against ex-President Donald Trump failed in the Senate. According to Pelosi, the neutral body should also investigate Trump’s efforts to prevent the peaceful transfer of power.

The Democrats accuse the Republican of encouraging his supporters to storm the Capitol at a January 6 rally. More than 200 people have already been charged with federal crimes related to the violence.

The mob rages at the Capitol

Five people were killed in the attack on parliament, including a police officer. MPs, senators and then Vice President Mike Pence were brought to safety just a few minutes before the angry mob stormed the meeting rooms. Congress met that day to confirm the election of Joe Biden as the new US president.

Since then, the Capitol has largely been cordoned off with a barbed wire fence. Around 6,000 National Guard soldiers are still deployed there to protect Parliament from new attacks. As early as January, the head of the Capitol Police urged MPs to provide permanent fencing and generally better security precautions.
