Thierry Breton announced on the morning of Monday, September 16, his resignation from the Commission. The French Commissioner in charge of Internal Market matters, he claimed, that the head of the EU, Ursula von der Leyen asked Paris to withdraw its candidacy for the new executive body.

The letter to the President of the Commission
In a letter, Thierry Breton told Ursula von der Leyen that “a few days ago» asked France to withdraw its name as the country’s choice for the Commission. He stated that he took this action “for personal reasons” giving in return a “purported most influential portfolio».

This decision by the Commissioner comes at a time when the President of the Commission is finalizing the list of Commissioners after the European elections. However, with his departure, France will have to nominate a replacement and therefore the presentation of the new House of Commissioners, originally scheduled for September 11, is likely to be postponed again.
