The bishops present at the plenary meeting of the representatives of the episcopal organizations of the European Union, held in Brussels from 12 to 14 October, launched a strong appeal for an immediate end to the Russian aggression in Ukraine. The Episcopal Committee has invited both sides to work to resolve the conflict.

The Commission of Episcopal Organizations of the European Union declared in a statement to ask those responsible for the attacks in Ukraine to put an end to hostilities and achieve a just and lasting peace, following numerous appeals made by the Holy Father, Pope Francis and the Holy Site. What is needed is a solution that respects international law and the integrity of Ukraine.

In a statement prepared in the context of the Autumn 2022 Plenary Assembly of the Commission of Episcopal Organizations of the European Union, the Bishops of the European Union expressed their deep sorrow for the terrible suffering of the Ukrainian people due to the brutal military aggression launched by the Russian authorities in Ukraine.

The bishops expressed their closeness to the people, including the millions of refugees, who are suffering from this violent war. The Episcopal Council has expressed concern that the intensified attacks taking place these days create the possibility that the war will spread to more places with more devastating consequences.

In this conference, which mentioned the possible consequences of the war in Russia and Ukraine on the socio-economic levels of people in Europe and other countries, he said that the current problems highlight the foresight and values that existed in the establishment of the European Union. The Bishops’ Conference expressed its joy at the declaration of solidarity with Ukraine by political decision makers in Europe during the current crisis.
