The effects of the coronavirus crisis can be clearly seen in the half-year balance sheet of Raiffeisenbank International (RBI). The bank’s profit shrank year-on-year by more than a third to 368 million euros. Because of the balance sheet scandal at Commerzialbank Mattersburg, RBI is in favor of a deductible for bank customers.

The head of Raiffeisenbank International Johann Strobl himself comes from Mattersburg and is concerned. Many people would have lost a lot of money at the commercial bank. Nevertheless, the bank boss demands more personal responsibility. Depositors should be required to pay a deductible, similar to car insurance. “As with any insurance, it is advisable to have a low deductible – whether that makes up the interest or a little more,” says Strobl.
Bausparkasse has to inject more money into deposit insurance
The scandal surrounding the commercial bank also hits RBI. A subsidiary of the bank, the Raiffeisen Bausparkasse, has to pour more money into the deposit insurance. “Raiffeisen Bausparkasse will come in around 18 million euros,” said Strobl. The payment will be spread over the next five years.
