Commerce Secretary warns of potential security threats from Chinese-made smart cars in the US

After US President Biden announced that he would investigate smart cars made in China, Commerce Secretary Raimondo claimed on Friday (1st) that smart cars made in China may be “collecting data on millions of Americans every minute” and “if There are 3 million Chinese cars on the road in the United States, and Beijing can shut them all down at the same time.”

According to “MSNBC”, Raimondo said that today’s cars are like “iPhones on wheels” and can record a large amount of information. “Imagine if there are millions of Chinese-made cars running on American roads, collecting data on millions of Americans every minute, and then transmitting this data back to Beijing…”

If the vehicle’s software is disabled, it will render the car inoperable, Raimondo said. “Imagine if there were 3 million Chinese-made cars on American roads and Beijing could shut them down at the same time,” she said.

According to the New York Times, the Biden administration announced on Thursday that it would take measures to prevent Chinese connected cars and trucks from entering the U.S. market. The United States believes that the Internet-connected operating systems of these cars will collect sensitive data on American citizens and infrastructure and transmit this data back to China, posing a threat to national security.

The U.S. Commerce Department will take immediate action to launch an investigation into security threats, which could lead to new regulations or restrictions on cars produced in China.

對此,中國外交部發言人毛寧周五在例行記者會上表示,中國汽車在全球廣受歡迎,靠的不是所謂「不公平做法」,而是在激烈市場競爭中形成的技術創新和過硬quality.

Mao Ning said that China has always opened its door to global automobile companies, and American automakers have always fully enjoyed the dividends of China’s large market. On the contrary, the United States has engaged in trade protectionism and set up discriminatory subsidy policies and other obstacles, which have seriously hindered Chinese cars from entering the U.S. market.

Mao Ning pointed out that this kind of politicization of economic and trade issues will only hinder the development of the US automobile industry. China urges the United States to respect the laws of the market economy and the principles of fair competition, stop generalizing the concept of national security, stop discriminating and suppressing Chinese companies, and effectively maintain an open, fair and non-discriminatory business environment.
