Privileges: Open the cinemas, operas and theaters for vaccinated people!

What the discussion about privileges for the immunized is really about and why we shouldn’t wait until everyone has had the opportunity to be vaccinated.

Vaccinated people could still wear masks.

What must everything in the vaccination certificate? Politicians are racking their brains over this. The discussion about proof of protection, in which past Covid diseases or recently negative corona tests should be certified, has only just begun.

Thousands of people, mostly elderly, are now fully vaccinated. The rate of immunity increases day by day. And those who have been vaccinated sit at home even though they have – and this is becoming increasingly clearer – vaccination protection, also with regard to the risk of transmission that they pose.

So what speaks against going to the cinema? Or a trip to the opera? That they will of course remain closed unless the Federal Council decides to open them on Friday. In the opera and in some cinemas, an audience composed exclusively of vaccinated people would not differ much from the usual audience.

In any case, studies show that older people, i.e. those who have already been vaccinated, make up a large part of the regular audience of such cultural sites. This is particularly striking in opera houses with a proportion of over 65-year-olds in the audience, which will soon be 60 percent. With the increasing vaccination rate, a critical number has now been reached, which is necessary for the implementation of some cultural events.

A debate about envy would be wrong

Protective measures such as masks, distance or contact tracing continue to apply. So what speaks against a reopening for vaccinated people? The lack of protection for staff who have not yet been vaccinated? Limited, because your risk of infection would be small. The virus mutations against which the vaccination may be less effective?

Yes, but this uncertainty will keep us busy for a long time. And anyway: “Test, test, test” does not apply exclusively to unvaccinated people. You used to go to the hairdresser before the opera, in future you will just go to the corona test. What’s in it?

The argument remains a kind of joint and several liability. The older ones should now please show their solidarity towards the young. If renunciation, then from all.

“Collective suffering is almost stylized into a Zwinglian ideal of privation.”

After all, in a year’s pandemic, the boys had to forego their fun, notably to protect the elderly, who are more affected by the corona virus. And now the elderly, who are already privileged because of the vaccination, should be privileged again right away? How unfair!

If there are vaccination privileges, then please only when everyone in Switzerland has had the opportunity to vaccinate, that is the argument that has been heard a lot. It just doesn’t work. Artificially stifling the demand for culture seems absurd in times of government grants amounting to billions and the threatened desertification of social life. In addition, many artists would be helped if their work would finally meet with a physical echo again.

There will be a heated discussion anyway

If the cinemas, theaters and opera houses are now opening to the vaccinated, this undoubtedly harbors potential for conflict between young and old. But it does amount to conflicts anyway, the debate about privileges for immunized people will be fierce at the latest when everyone is in the Switzerland received the possibility of a vaccination against the coronavirus.

With an opening now, at least a start on a small scale would be possible. There would be a kind of laboratory situation for later, when the large masses have the vaccination behind them. With the duration of the vaccination campaign, more and more immunized are added. The discrimination against the unvaccinated is therefore of limited duration. If the federal vaccination plan works, all those who want it will be vaccinated in the summer.
