Commentary on the Leipzig airport expansion: Facts instead of feelings!

A Forsa survey gives impetus to the planned airport expansion in Leipzig. But this snapshot does not replace the social discussion of whether every price is justified for economic growth, says TAG24 author Alexander Bischoff in his comment.
Leipzig – As a snack bar with the runway Leipziger Airport mocked shortly after the turn. Long time ago. The hundreds of millions of euros in expansion with two runways and the settlement of DHL were the initial spark. Since then, the airport, which is actually on the Schkeuditz corridor, has been playing in the Euroleague and is fourth in terms of tonnage behind Frankfurt, Paris and Amsterdam.

The fact that all this was possible has to do with the night flight permit, which gives the airport a huge competitive advantage and keeps some residents from sleeping.
And this 24-hour ticket is now also the basis for the next stage of expansion, which is intended to make Leipzig Europe’s number 1 in the freight business.
Mitteldeutsche Flughafen AG is now responding to the thousands of objections to the expansion that have been raised during the planning approval process with a commissioned Forsa survey, which brought to light exactly the results that the client wanted. Support for the airport expansion in the population of the neighboring communities!

The fact that survey results essentially depend on the question is well known and also becomes clear in the current study. It should also be clear that not everyone in Leipzig, Halle or North Saxony is affected by aircraft noise.

In this respect, the Forsa study is more of a symbolic value. It will not have any influence on the planning process. Because there it is about hard facts such as possible health-damaging effects of the expansion of flight operations – and not about asked feelings.
The expansion of the airport is important for further economic growth with new settlements and jobs. On the other hand, there are the no less important concerns of climate and environmental protection. What is more important in the end?
A difficult consideration that requires a broad social discussion and no hasty surveys.
