In overseas Major League Soccer (MLS), our football player Ján Greguš has so far completed three seasons. He will certainly add at least one extra, as he has agreed on a 1 + 1 contract, ie for a year with a one-year option, with the San Jose Earthquakes team.
So far, the midfielder, who will celebrate his 31st birthday later this month, has worked in Minnesota United. He was one of the mainstays of the two-and-a-half seasons, but in recent months, coach Adrian Heath has put him on the sidelines. He trusted other players, but with whom he was eliminated in the first round of the playoffs, while the year before, Minnesota and Greguš had reached the final of the Western Conference.
In his position, known as number eight in football, Ján Greguš is synonymous with reliability. You want to have just such a player in the middle of the field on the field when it comes to something. Of course, they are better in the world than him. They play in the English Premier League, the Italian Serie A or the Spanish La Lige. In the next sequence, however, a native of Nitra is still in demand after the age of thirty.
In addition to San Jose, he wanted to get two more teams in the MLS, he received offers from Malaga or teams from The Championship, ie from the second Spanish and English competition, as well as from elite leagues in Turkey and Cyprus. However, he himself wanted to stay behind the “big hit”, so the choice fell on San Jose, albeit at the expense of some reduction in financial demands.
Coach Matias Almeyda, a two-time World Cup participant in Argentina and a former player from Lazio, Parma or Inter Milan, asked him to join the staff. Like Greguš, he played in the middle of the field and, like Slovák, he had excellent strength parameters, although he is of lower stature.
However, he knows that San Jose needs to improve, especially in the backward game, where he needs to gain stability, toughness and security. He now has a player with Ján Greguš who will provide him with these attributes. And when, as in your most successful season overseas, eleven assists are glistening, it will be just a welcome bonus.
