Hamburg’s financially weak districts are much more affected by the pandemic than the average. This was the result of an evaluation of district data by the NDR Hamburg Journal. On the Veddel, five times as many people per thousand residents were infected as in Blankenese or Sasel. Reinhard Postelt comments.
Have you ever asked yourself how high the risk of infection is in your district? We don’t know until a year after the pandemic started. It was the NDR, which evaluated the data. The city has had them for months. But she ignored them. Reason: Hamburg is a “unified community”, the numbers were of no use.
Didn’t politics and administration want to look?
Is that true? Infection sources are simply ignored? I’m afraid politics and administration wouldn’t even look. They may be afraid of saying something politically incorrect, of being verbally abused on the Internet, and of being lumped together with racists. It could be that the extremely high level of infection in financially weak districts is not only related to cramped living conditions. It could also be a consequence of the high proportion of migrants and their problems of understanding.
It’s about protecting people
Maybe politicians should take a look around Wilhelmsburg or Billstedt. You can’t overlook it there: most of them adhere to the regulations, but you will see a lot more men there than in Sasel or Eimsbüttel, standing very close together without a mask. It’s not about making bad, it’s about protecting people. Cities like Cologne or the districts of Harburg and Pinneberg have been publishing local corona values for a long time and can thus effectively prevent them. I go out less when I know that the risk of infection in my district is five times higher than elsewhere.
Education in different languages and social work compulsory
Doctors mostly confirm behind closed doors that a disproportionately large number of corona patients with a migration background struggle with death in intensive care units. So it is imperative to provide information on site in different languages by means of leaflets and social work. Only after the great response to the NDR publication the factions of Hamburg’s SPD and the Greens felt compelled to act – with more prevention in affected quarters.
Politicians must not hide problems
The politicians do not mention a word of problem groups in their motion. If no one is held accountable, if only circumstances are to blame, nothing will get better for any of us. Politicians who enforce curfews are no longer allowed to keep quiet about problems. They also have to provide more targeted information and help on site.
