Commemoration of the murder of Pim Fortuyn disrupted during a minute of silence

In Rotterdam, the commemoration of Pim Fortuyn was disrupted by about ten demonstrators. About 400 people attended the moment, which was held at the statue of the politician on Pim Fortuynplaats.

At 6.06 pm the participants observed a two-minute silence. At that time, Volkert van der Graaf shot Pim Fortuyn dead 20 years ago at the Media Park in Hilversum. A memorial was also held at the murder site earlier today.

Initially, a silent tour was planned in Rotterdam. It would run from Fortuyn’s former home to the statue. The tour was only canceled because the people who were at the Media Park threatened to miss the moment at 6.06 pm due to traffic jams.

Screaming protesters

During the moment of silence in Rotterdam, a group of protesters started shouting at the participants of the commemoration. The police called it a ‘short disturbance’. The regional broadcaster Rijnmond reports that the protesters come from the far-left corner and that two people have been arrested.

In the video below, Rotterdammers tell what is left of Fortuyn’s ideas 20 years later.
