Hoes and Schuurman are part of the ABSASVN, the Amicale Belgian SAS Circle of Friends Netherlands, a re-enactment association that commemorates and honors the war liberators in the Netherlands. “We try to keep the story of liberation alive,” says Schuurman. ‘That’s why we also wear original uniforms from that time. Today David is wearing the uniform of the Polish soldiers who liberated East Groningen and I am wearing that of Royal Hamilton’s, a Canadian regiment that liberated the city of Groningen in April 1945. But we do this mainly in memory of the war victims. We want to keep telling their story and keep it alive.’
