Commemorate World AIDS Day, recognize the causes and symptoms

World AIDS Day is celebrated every 1 December. WHO issued this warning to raise worldwide public awareness of AIDS (Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome).

Quoting the Health Service website, AIDS has a definition of a set of infectious symptoms and syndromes that arise due to damage to the human immune system by the HIV virus (Human immunodeficiency virus).

HIV is one of the most serious global health problems. So far, WHO has recorded 36.3 lives lost to HIV infection.


Similarly in Indonesia, the Ministry of Health noted that the number of HIV cases in 2021 reached 36,902 cases, affecting most of the population of working age.

Hence, it is important for people to know the causes and symptoms of AIDS.

Launch Health, HIV attacks the human immune system by entering a type of white blood cell called CD4 and making copies of itself. Then, HIV kills these cells and attacks other CD4 cells.

Usually, people infected with HIV do not have any symptoms for years. However, if HIV is not treated, the sufferer will experience AIDS.

AIDS starts when the body’s immunity is damaged by the HIV virus.

How can an HIV infected person get AIDS?

If a person has HIV and is not treated, the virus will continue to destroy the body’s immune system, including the most important cell types, namely CD4 cells and T cells.

These two cells play a role in protecting the body from infection. When the body doesn’t have enough CD4, the body will easily fall ill from an infection. At this stage, AIDS occurs.
