Commandant’s offices are another way to contribute to the defense of the state

Each person must know his role in the defense of the state and acquire the practical skills necessary to resist, because knowledge gives confidence. In order for everyone to understand their roles, a new peacetime military commandant’s structure is being created in the Lithuanian army. This will be another way to allow citizens to contribute to the defense of the state.
– Who are military commanders in peacetime, what is their role? What is the purpose and benefit of their creation to society?
Commandant’s offices are a peacetime military unit, they are another way to contribute to the defense of the state. The new structure of military commandants during peacetime is being created on the basis of the military service and recruitment service and commandants of the Lithuanian army. In addition to the appointed commandants and their deputies and commandant units, there will be an opportunity to train reservists in peacetime and to impart military knowledge to patriotic citizens who have registered in the commandant units, to integrate them into the structure of the commandant units.
Military command posts – the rear system – support for the Lithuanian army in case of war, where Lithuanian citizens will be able to apply their skills, help ensure vital functions of the state, contribute to the creation of a safe environment and unite the region to defend against the enemy.
– Who makes up the commandant?
The commandant’s office consists of commandants and their deputies, commandant units. They consist of professional military servicemen, assigned conscripts of the prepared reserve, as well as commandant marksmen of the Lithuanian Rifle Association. Later, the commandant units will be filled with civilians willing to contribute to the defense of the state. There will be an opportunity to train reservists in peacetime and to provide patriotic citizens with military knowledge and integrate them into the structure of commandant units.
– Can everyone sign up for the commandant’s office?
All patriotic citizens can sign up for commandant offices. Men and women can apply to their city commandants. It is important to emphasize that people will be accepted for service in the commandant’s office based on their individual characteristics, experience, training and available qualifications, as well as suitability for the positions to which they are scheduled to be assigned.
– Is a person’s specialty important? Are some specialties more necessary than others?
Patriotic people of all specialties and education who want to prepare for national defense and acquire basic military knowledge and skills are welcome at the commandant’s offices.
– How many people are expected to be received, how many can be accepted, trained, armed?
It is planned that commandant units will be provided with weapons and equipment (during exercises). Equipping one commandant unit soldier with new equipment would preliminarily cost about 12 thousand. Eur. During peacetime, their military training in war commandant units will be ensured by the National Defense Volunteer Forces. It is expected that 2 to 5 thousand people will sign up for commandant offices. persons.
– Will the selection of registered people be organized? Will there be people who want to, but will not be able to participate in the activities of commandants?
The needs of the Lithuanian Armed Forces will be assessed, that is, the individual characteristics, experience, training, available qualifications, suitability for the duties to which they are planned to be appointed.
– What will be the medical requirements (physical, psychological)? Who will carry out the checks – military or medical health protection institutions?
It is planned to establish lower requirements for the state of health, they will be checked by the Military Health Care Institutions.
– What will be the training of the people who came to the commandant’s office? What awaits them?
The military training of civilians who want to contribute to the defense of the state in peacetime will be ensured by the National Defense Volunteer Forces (KASP) in military commandant units. Individuals enrolled in commando units will be trained 3-10 days per year by being called to exercise as part of that unit, along with other Ready Reserve soldiers assigned to these units.
– What will be the supply of people, will they be given uniforms, weapons, other necessary equipment?
Provision of weapons and equipment to commandant units will be ensured (during exercises). During peacetime, their military training in war commandant units will be ensured by the National Defense Volunteer Forces.
– Who should not register at military commandant’s offices during peacetime?
Those appointed to the active military personnel reserve, performing actual military service or who do not meet the general requirements for soldiers (citizenship, criminal record, capacity) would not be admitted to commandant offices. It should be noted that serving in the reserve (commandant’s office) does not exempt those who have not obtained basic military training from being called up for mandatory initial military service.
– What roles will people who join military commandantries have to play?
In the event of a war, citizens included in the commandant’s lists and having acquired military skills will help defend their town or district, protect important objects in the residential environment.
Persons belonging to the curfew units will take care of the protection of important objects in their city or district, organize security checkpoints, ensure the observance of curfew rules, participate in the property requisition process, monitor the environment, fight against illegal armed groups or perform other tasks assigned by the Lithuanian army.
– When will it be possible to sign up for military commandantships during peacetime?
Citizens who want to contribute to the defense of the state and acquire military skills can register at the nearest Conscription and Recruitment Service branch or by filling out the form at karys.lt. Registration for peacetime commandant units began in 2024. May 1 and will continue until August 31.
– When will military commandant offices start functioning during peacetime?
It is planned that already in October of this year, during the peace of the military commandants, military training will be started in the commandant units.

Last week, the largest number of people who registered at the military commandant’s offices during peacetime were in the Vilnius region, 885 people wanted to contribute to the state defense there, 796 of them in the city of Vilnius. In Kaunas region, 348 people registered for commandant offices, 261 of them in Kaunas. In Klaipėda region, 138 people joined commandant offices, 114 of them in Klaipėda. In the Alytus region, 100 civic-minded people filled in applications to join the commandant offices, in the Šiauliai region – 92, and in the Panevėžys region – 37 people.
