Dan Ekborg talks about mental illness

There will be a lot of laughter mixed with serious conversations, not least about alcohol problems and losing hope in life, something Dan Ekborg is familiar with:

Dan Ekborg’s relationship with his mother: “She was quite tough”

That the problems he encountered later in life were due to his mother’s expectations of him was something he did not realize until he began going to therapy.

– When I said I was going to apply to the acting school, mother said “do you have to disgrace father’s name?”. It’s a nice support to get. She was quite tough, says Dan and continues:

– But she herself grew up in very tough conditions. So with that you become quite hard. But then she was a bit harsh, but maybe she thought it was the best way to make me better and more hardened. But it didn’t turn out that way, it turned out wrong.

Many were afraid to work with Dan Ekborg

The problems eventually found their way into Dan’s career. He explains that the anger he carried around could spill over onto his colleagues.

– I am so self-critical, which affects the mood. I think most of my friends would say that I haven’t changed a thing. Hopefully I have become a little wiser. But I can get very angry. I think that has cost me my job and work. I think many people were very afraid to work with me.
