A kangaroo playing air guitar, an otter dancing gracefully like a ballerina or birds discussing. These are just a few examples of the funniest animal photos from last year. The ‘Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards’ were also presented this year and once again there are some gems among them.
Photographers Paul Joynson-Hicks and Tom Sullam founded the ‘Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards’ in 2015. They created a competition that focuses on the light-hearted and funny side of nature photography in order to stimulate the conservation of our animal world through humor. Meanwhile, the competition enjoys worldwide recognition and every year thousands of photographers take a shot at one of the awards.
The big winner of 2023 is the Australian photographer Jason Moore with the photo “Air Guitar Roo”. Moore drove past a group of kangaroos feeding in an open field full of yellow flowers. “I had my camera with me so I stopped to take a few pictures. Suddenly I saw this kangaroo strike a humorous pose, to me it looks like he is practicing strumming his air guitar,” says Moore about his photo, which received no fewer than two awards.

In the flying animals category, Italian photographer Vittorio Ricci wins with the photo “Unexpected dive”. “An unusual and almost miserable end to a perfect moment, prepared in advance, for a successful fishing,” says the photographer.

In the amazing internet portfolio category, entries must have a collage of 4 images that together form a funny story. Photographer Tímea Ambrus wins in this category with the collage of a brave squirrel, with the name: “I finally learned to fly or – or maybe not”.

In the video category, the prize goes to photographer Lily Bernau who was able to spot several penguins, one of which seems to find the water very cold. The video was called: “Penguin Adélie avoids a dip with his friends in the cold water”.
