Comedies Deserving of Academy Award Nominations: From ‘The Big Lebowski’ to ‘School of Rock’

When choosing the best films of the year, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences often favors dramatic and emotionally charged films, pushing comedies a bit to the side. As a result, many high-quality films that moved audiences around the world and brought tears of laughter to streams tend to go underappreciated. Unless, of course, they have a slightly dramatic flavor added to them. For example, the film “Miss Saulstariņš” (“Little Miss Sunshine”, 2006) received the award for the best screenplay. However, there are a whole host of comedies that also deserve this prestigious award or at least a nomination.

“The Big Lebowski”, 1998

Brothers Joel and Ethan Coen have received a total of 15 Academy Award nominations during their illustrious career, of which they won five times, taking home the gilded “Oscar” statuette. However, the filmmakers did not receive an award or a nomination for one of their favorite films – “The Big Lebowski”. Thus, the film became one of the rare works of the Coen brothers that was not nominated for an Oscar.

In the film, Jeff Bridges plays Jeff Lebowski, who thieves accidentally mistake for a millionaire and demand money from him. But what angers Lebowski the most is the damaged carpet, which he also hastens to avenge by getting involved in the real world of crime and corruption. Although the Coen brothers themselves loved this film, it struggled to collect the projected box office revenue in the US and only became really popular several years after its release.

“Airplane!” (“Airplane!”, 1980)

The joint work of the Zacker brothers and Jim Abraham “Airplane!” is one of the most popular comedies of all time. It still ranks on the best movie lists and is considered one of the best parodies of all time.

Unlike the Coen brothers’ comedy, “Airplane!” was an instant success, grossing over $130 million worldwide against a budget of three million. The film was also highly appreciated by critics – it received a BAFTA nomination for best screenplay, as well as a Golden Globe nomination in the category “Best Film – Musical or Comedy”.

But despite all the nominations, the Academy did not give the comedy a single nomination, although the script of the film is really impressive – it not only presents an exciting story, but also fills the film with tasteful jokes.

“Groundhog Day” (“Groundhog Day”, 1993)

Bill Murray is a true comedy legend and his humor has always been respected. Murray participated in several important 1980-1990. in comedies, however, one of his best roles in Harold Ramis’s “Groundhog Day” did not receive an Academy Award. In the film, Murray plays Phil, an egotistical and grumpy meteorologist who is stuck in time and wakes up every morning on February 2nd.

The film was a success immediately after its release. It was highly appreciated by both viewers and critics. However, despite Murray’s excellent acting, Raimis’ successful direction and brilliant script, the film did not receive an Academy Award. However, it won the BAFTA Award for Best Screenplay.

“Superbad” (“Superbad”, 2007)

Greg Mottola’s Super Wanted is considered by many to be one of the greatest high school comedies of the last 20 years. Since the film’s release in 2007, its characters have been quoted endlessly, but the film has been revisited again and again.

The film stars John Hill, Michael Cera and Emma Stone. Although the acting was excellent and the script heartfelt and adventurous, the film failed to earn an Oscar nomination. However, Motola can be proud of his performance, because the film has become a classic in the comedy genre.

“School of Rock” (“School of Rock”, 2003)

Jack Black played one of his best roles in Richard Linklater’s School of Rock. Black plays Dewey Finn, who is kicked out of a rock band and forced to work at a prestigious private school, which ends up being a hilarious adventure.

Despite the fact that the film became one of the highest rated of 2003, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences did not award a nomination, although the film had both a wonderful script and excellent music.
