Combatting Piracy in Italian Football: The Fight for System Integrity and the Battle Against Violence Against Women

“We are waiting for the happy day when the technology platform can truly interrupt the pirate event in 30 minutes.” Then he announces: “A special shirt against violence against women and the team captains will read a poem”

“An epochal battle that Italian football is fighting for the entire system at an international level”. These are the words with which the CEO of the Lega Serie A Luigi De Siervo defines the fight against piracy from the stage of the Social Football Summit scheduled today and tomorrow at the Olympic stadium in Rome. “The spread of digital means that we can commit crimes from our own home, comfortably sitting on the sofa, without perceiving criminal activity as such. Fans must understand that if they don’t pay they damage their team: the damage caused to us by piracy is over 300 million a year, which means that due to the fault of those who watch the matches on the spot, Roma and Lazio, just for the sake of for example, they have to give up the purchase of one or two samples”.

for the system

After the law on piracy approved in July, according to De Siervo “we are at a decisive point of synthesis, we are waiting for the happy day in which the technological platform can truly interrupt the pirate event in 30 minutes. If we want our football to be great again we have to make sure that everything falls back on track. From a regulatory point of view too much has been said, this is a summary point. A lot of good work has been done, with a cutting-edge law and Agcom which is finalizing a complex operational process, I hope that everything will be resolved in the timescale that has been proposed to us because the damage is enormous”. He therefore reiterates: “What we are doing is for the benefit of the entire system, the much maligned football is doing a job to help everyone. However, I fear that it is also important to target the end user of the pirate platform, he must be punished with fines of up to 5 thousand euros, unfortunately I believe it is a necessary deterrent given that in Italy on this front there is a lack of a culture of legality. Footballers and presidents must expose themselves personally, Vieri did it but everyone must do it, explaining in less dusty language than mine why this thing is so wrong. It is an epochal battle that concerns everyone and that we fight on an international level.”

the platform

The point about the famous platform is made by Benedetta Liberatore, Agcom digital services director: “We are working to combat live events, but the authority has been successfully fighting online piracy for 10 years and does so systematically. Since September we have blocked 150 sites that violated Dazn’s rights. Now that the pirates are structuring themselves, we are developing a technological platform to intervene very quickly, 30 minutes, and we have been working on it since before the law. Agcom is ready, we are starting the testing phases and the times will be very quick. We cannot afford failures.”

De Siervo then spoke on the state of health of Serie A: “We continue to be unfairly massacred compared to other leagues, in recent years we have led four different teams to victory and three Italian teams in the last season were in the three European finals: this is proof that we are fine, as are full stadiums and an ever-growing audience. The investment funds then thought above all of Serie A which is thought to have the greatest margins for growth. Why? It is mainly due to what we have not done in the last 20 years, while English and Spanish football moved earlier and better.” After having reiterated the need to improve the Italian systems and exalted the fact that it was the first to choose to introduce VAR, GLT and semi-automatic offside, as well as having built the production center in Lissone and given life to Radio Serie A, the .d. of the League announces an important initiative: “We were very struck by the tragedy of Giulia Cecchettin. For next week’s matches we will prepare a special shirt against violence against women and the team captains will read a poem. “We want to make the fans understand in an understandable way that a violent attitude towards anyone is in no way acceptable, much less towards the women we say we love”, added De Siervo, recalling that the initiative is part of the “A red to violence”, promoted as every year for seven years by the Lega Serie A.
