Comal County Breaks Ground on New Mental Health Facility
New Braunfels, Texas – Comal County is addressing the growing need for mental health services with the groundbreaking of a new 16,000-square-foot facility. The project, funded by the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), represents a significant investment in local healthcare and community well-being.
The groundbreaking ceremony took place on Thursday, marking a crucial step towards providing much-needed mental health care within the county. The facility, slated for completion by the end of 2025, will offer 16 beds and provide a vital resource for residents.
Hill Country Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities will operate the facility, ensuring seamless integration with existing community support systems. This partnership is particularly crucial as Comal County experiences continued population growth, increasing the demand for mental health services.
Tod Citron, chief executive officer of Hill Country Mental Health and developmental Disabilities, emphasized the significance of this local initiative. “This is an possibility to treat locally rather of them having to get shipped off to some private hospital that might be hundreds of miles away,” Citron said. “Thay are served here, stabilized in their own community, and then we refer them out locally for services.”
The new facility signifies a proactive approach to addressing mental health challenges within Comal County. By providing accessible and comprehensive care close to home, residents will benefit from reduced travel burdens and improved access to crucial support networks. This initiative aligns with national efforts to expand access to mental healthcare and reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness.
The project’s completion by the end of 2025 is eagerly anticipated by community members and healthcare professionals alike. It represents a significant step forward in ensuring that residents of Comal County have access to the mental health support they need, right in their own community.
