Many people see it as a kind of blessing that I can review games. When I consider myself among other gamers and mention that I sometimes review, there are always a lot of positive aspects of the profession are mentioned. However, this experience can also be different.
Often the term reviewer or reviewer does very well among gamers. After all, you get games that you didn’t have to pay for. That is the most often heard advantage that I hear and that is of course completely true. After all, games can often be a bit pricey, especially when you have less to spend. I completely agree with that argument. A second positive point that I often hear is that you can sometimes play games before the official release date. That is again true, but here also comes the first downside. You may be able to play the game in question before its release date, but you won’t be able to experience it with your friends. That is definitely a negative point about reviewing games, because I like to experience them together with others. You are also not allowed to speak about this game yet, something that is sometimes a bit of a bite on the tongue. Especially when I’m really excited about it.
This game is nothing at all
When I find myself on the other side of the spectrum and don’t like a game at all, there are again some drawbacks to reviewing. After all, I can’t throw the game in question into the proverbial corner and never look back at it. No, I will really have to play the game in question for at least a few hours to be able to give a full and honest opinion about it. That means playing on when I really don’t want to anymore.
It also happens regularly that I really like a game, but can’t fully enjoy it. This is due to time pressure and especially with larger games this can be a thing. After all, I am expected to come up with a review within fourteen days. That makes sense, because in the first month(s), a review is more relevant and more people are simply looking for it. However, the time pressure means that I sometimes have to play an evening while I didn’t really feel like it at the time. Or that I go through some parts of the game a bit faster than I would like. Those are aspects that people who don’t review easily forget.
Don’t get me wrong, because reviewing games is a lot of fun and offers many benefits. I am very grateful that I can do this for this website. However, it is not all roses and moonshine, because there is also a flip side to the coin and other people quickly forget that.
