Column by Alexander Lipenko. Football Dynamo May

May is a significant month for FC Dynamo (Kyiv). On May 13, 1927, the star of the team rose on the football horizon, winning 29 gold medals in the championships of the former USSR and Ukraine, as well as 22 Cups. The people of Kiev achieved many of their victories in May. The first of them – in the first USSR championship in 1936, in which the “white-blues” won silver medals, they celebrated on May 31 in Leningrad in a match with the Krasnaya Zarya club – 7:2. Dynamo won their first Cup of the Ukrainian SSR on May 18, 1937, defeating their teammates from Odessa 4:2 in Kyiv.

“Dynamo” (Kyiv) – winner of the Cup Winners’ Cup of the 1985/86 season

In the 1938 USSR Championship, the people of Kiev defeated Leningrad Spartak on their field on May 18 – 7:0, and on the 24th they beat Pishchevik (Moscow) – 4:2. In the 1939 championship, Dynamo defeated Elektrik (Leningrad) 1:0 on May 6, and five days later Lokomotiv (Moscow) 2:1. In May 1940, in the national championship, the Moscow Torpedo were defeated – 1:0 and CDKA – 4 1. Many victories in May were won by the team from the banks of the Dnieper in subsequent championships of the former USSR. On May 6, 1991, in the last season of all-Union football, the Kievans defeated their Moscow teammates (2:1) at the Republican Stadium in Kiev.

And the first May victory in the debut championship of independent Ukraine was achieved on May 7, 1992 in an away match with Dnepr – 2:1. There were May failures in different years, but they were many times smaller.

Memorable goals

The 2000th Dynamo goal in the USSR championships was scored on May 28, 1985 in the Dynamo – Spartak (Moscow) match. In the 51st minute, the future winner of the 1986 Golden Ball, Igor Belanov, scored. He put the winning point – 2:0, he also opened the scoring in this game. On May 18, 1993, in the match Lithuania – Ukraine – 1:2, which took place in Vilnius, Viktor Leonenko and Dmitry Mikhailenko scored goals. On May 1, 1996, in an away match with the Turkish team, Andrei Shevchenko scored the first goal as part of the Ukrainian national team. Then the future winner of the 2004 Ballon d’Or spoiled the mood of the goalkeepers of our main team’s opponents 47 more times, eventually becoming its head coach, and today the president of the UAF.

Two Cup Winners’ Cups

May brought two great victories to Dynamo Kyiv in the European Cup tournament. On May 14, 1975, in Basel on the field of the St. Jacobs Stadium, Dynamo defeated Ferencváros (Budapest) in the final match of the Cup Winners’ Cup with a score of 3:0. After the awards ceremony, UEFA President Artemio Franchi said: “I don’t remember when in recent years one team has had such a convincing lead over the other in a final. “Dynamo is truly a top-class club.” In this game, Onishchenko scored two goals and Blokhin scored one. Together with them in the team of Valery Lobanovsky in the finals were Rudakov, Konkov, Matvienko, Troshkin, Fomenko, Reshko, Buryak, Kolotov.

On May 2, 1986, in Lyon on the Gerland stadium field in the presence of 45 thousand spectators, most of whom were from Spain, Dynamo Kiev beat Atlético Madrid (Madrid) 3:0 in their second Cup Winners’ Cup final. “Today we lost to an outstanding team,” Madrid coach Luis Aragones said after the game. In this match, Zavarov, Blokhin and Yevtushenko distinguished themselves. Together with them, Chanov, Bessonov, Baltacha, Bal, Kuznetsov, Demyanenko, Rat, Yakovenko, Yaremchuk and Belanov gave this victory to millions of fans. This was the second European Cup success for Valery Lobanovsky’s team.

We measure our football according to Lobanovsky

Undoubtedly, May 13, 2002 is a dark day in the history of the Dynamo club. On this day at 20:35, the tireless football heart of the outstanding coach Valery Vasilyevich Lobanovsky stopped in one of the hospitals in Zaporozhye. On May 7, after the end of the Ukrainian championship match between Metallurg Zaporozhye and Dynamo, the head coach of the Kiev team was taken to the hospital directly from the stadium by ambulance. The country’s best specialists fought for Lobanovsky’s life, but alas… He died with dignity, worthy of his greatness. Valery Vasilyevich deserved incredible popular love.

His players won gold in the USSR Championship 8 times, the National Cup 6 times, the Championship of Independent Ukraine 5 times, and the National Cup 3 times. In 1975, in which Dynamo won the Cup Winners’ Cup and the European Super Cup, Valery Lobanovsky’s team was called one of the strongest in the world. Lobanovsky is an Honored Coach of the USSR and Ukraine, winner of the UEFA Ruby Order “For Merit”, Hero of Ukraine (posthumously). For a long time to come we will measure our football by Lobanovsky…

What will May 2024 be like for Dynamo? Will a third star appear above the Dynamo emblem? This can happen if the people of Kiev become champions of Ukraine for the 17th time. Our main football tournament, the 33rd in a row, finishes on May 25.
