Colossal family of catrinas inaugurates festival in Zapotlanejo, Jalisco

Guadalajara, Jal. Local artists and tapeteros from Tlaxcala and Uriangato, Guanajuato, participated in the staging of the 15th Day of the Dead Festival in Zapotlanejo, Jalisco, giving magic and color to the festival that returned to this suburban municipality east of Guadalajara, whose greatest attraction is a enormous catrina 22 meters high, accompanied by its respective catrina of the same size and a monumental skull inside a stroller.

Zapotlanejo is known as the “cradle of clothing” in Jalisco and the main objective of the celebration, in which there is always a dispute with Puerto Vallarta to have the tallest catrina in the world, is to attract a greater number of visitors.

The competition for height also has the added bonus of getting more tourists to attend, in a competition that in the metropolitan area is disputed above all with the municipality of Tlaquepaque, which also holds a series of events these days that include parades, altars of the dead and colorful shop decorations in his first painting.

The structures in Zapotlanejo each weigh more than 5 and a half tons of steel, and reportedly have 750 square meters of clothing. The baby is 10 meters tall and weighs 2.5 tons, also made of steel and with a 2.20 meter high bottle.

Also placed on the esplanade were 21 skulls measuring 1.20 meters high, six catrina nuns in viceregal attire on a traditional 220-square-meter mat, and seven scenographic sets with decorations about famous families from the show.

The so-called fair of the dead in Zapotlanejo began on the night of Wednesday, October 30 and will last until November 17.
