Ecatepec, Méx. Colorful carpets made of painted sawdust and forming multiple geometric figures, flowers, religious images, animals or birds today adorned the streets of the town of Santa Clara Coatitla in Ecatepec for the religious procession in honor of Saint Clare of Assisi.
Tonight, no one sleeps in the town of Santa Clara, as they begin making the traditional carpets on Sunday, August 11, and work all night on Monday, August 12 to have them ready for the procession.
In the morning, the religious procession begins with the image of the patron saint, Saint Clare of Assisi, accompanied by wind music.

The procession began at 7 in the morning and for more than six hours the parishioners carried the image through the streets of the town passing by the multicoloured carpets.
This time, the festival took place on 24 streets where carpets were made along a length of more than 3 kilometers. To make the carpets, colored sawdust or white sand are used, as well as molds to design the figures.
Some people trace the design directly onto the floor without using moulds and then cover it with sawdust. To cover just one street and make the carpet, up to 100 bags of dyed sawdust are used.

There were religious images depicted on the rugs, as well as geometric figures of animals such as bulls, xoloscuincles dogs, birds such as hummingbirds, peacocks, cardinals, butterflies; flowers and pyramid or pre-Hispanic figures.
Families took to the streets to see and venerate the image of Saint Clare of Assisi and to enjoy the ephemeral art displayed on the streets.
Along the way, mariachi music, bands, trios and musical ensembles were offered to their patron saint, as well as floral arrangements and religious songs.
Religious celebrations will continue until next Sunday, August 18, when a new procession will take place through streets decorated with carpets and masses.
