Freiburg (dpa / lsw) – What was the 2020 pandemic year like? What will people need to know 100 years from now? What could you be interested in? On the 1000th anniversary of the city’s birth in 2120, Freiburg started a special project: citizens can write letters that are not supposed to be opened for a hundred years. “The letter campaign offers the unique opportunity to send a message into the future,” said Mayor Martin Horn (non-party) on the occasion of the kick-off on Thursday.
Until July 15, 2021, the letters can be thrown in the anniversary mailbox in front of the Old Town Hall or sent in another envelope to the City Anniversary project group. The envelope of the actual letter should say who should read it in 100 years. That could be your own descendants, the future owners of the house you are currently living in, the Federal Chancellor or the coach of a football club, suggested the city. On the back of the envelope, the name of the sender, address and other voluntary information about the person should be written.
“After that, people’s thoughts fall into a hundred-year slumber,” it said. According to the information, the letters will be stored in a safe place in the Freiburg city archives and handed over to the specified recipient in 2120. “This creates a collective legacy for posterity, texts and thoughts from these very different twenties that cannot be found in any history book, newspaper or novel.” The whole thing is private and not intended to have a public effect.
