Crowds took to the streets of Jackson Heights yesterday for a very colorful celebration.
That was the scene at this year’s thirty-first “New Queens Pride Parade” in Jackson Heights.
It is the second largest LGBTQ pride march in the city just after the one in Manhattan.
The day-long party features music, performances, local businesses, and food.
Thousands come out each year to recognize the impact on LGBTQ communities.
“It is very important since Queens is like a refuge for all the queer people from around the world who come to New York City, not exactly to Manhattan, but it is important to give them that welcome, that warmth,” says Alejandra Useche.
“Happy to be in the march because here we demand gender equality. Even today we celebrate a super important day for all of us because thank God we are visible to the whole world, ”he continues.
The event brought together a number of elected officials, many of whom represent Jackson Heights, such as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
The celebrations continue throughout the month.
The New York City Pride March is scheduled for Sunday, June 25.
