“Cinderella” is played for the first time in Latvia. The authors of the production, the creative tandem Barbe & Doucet, have chosen the style of the New York burlesque of the twentieth century, the action takes place in a cabaret, and the main character is a costume designer at the Angelina Theater, which belongs to her father.
Conductor Andris Veismanis explains that the soloists in the production have a lot of freedom in movement, melodicity, improvisations: century, though [opera] written in the 19th century. “
The main roles in the premiere are played by Hungarian mezzo-soprano Dorothea Langa and Colombian tenor Pablo Martiness. The seemingly light genre of cabaret and the music of Joaquino Rosini require great precision and a huge return from the participants of the production.
“This is my first performance in Latvia, and I hope not the last,” says Langa. “It was a very interesting experience for me, because this music is a big test for me, but I had a lot of fun. I felt a lot of support from the opera house, and everyone seemed to succeed. I am very happy and pleased to sing here in Latvia. Especially because you have a wonderful singing tradition, you can feel it in your voices, I learn even from the choir and other colleagues. “
The singer admits that she loves Rossini’s music: “It always makes me happy, it gives me a sunny feeling. In such wet times, it’s great music to sing. I’ve always felt very close to Italian culture, especially this era of opera music. Life is quite complicated, especially now , so we need such joyful and positive music all the more. “
Soloist Pablo Martiness, who plays Prince don Ramiro, is also happy to take part in the production: “Rossini’s music is difficult for vocalists, but it’s a pleasure to sing it. I like to be in this role. It was hard but enjoyable work. “
The singers admit that although the show is intended for adults, children will also have something to see.
Singer Krišjānis Norvelis says that playing this show is hard work and comparing it with a marathon, the staging was complicated by the pandemic: “The beginning was very difficult, it broke us a bit. We are used to being great artists here and always add something , they do [autori] we were completely uprooted, but at one point something was reborn, and that was very important for the ensemble’s opera. “
Rūta Muktupāvela, the rector of the premiere of the Latvian Academy of Culture, admitted after the performance that she is very blessed: “One thing that [tā] is an extremely beautiful opera in itself and has the highest level of sophistication, and Weisman, an honorable [darbojās] very intense and saturated. In fact, it is extremely gorgeous, and the whole idea of a chord ballet, in my opinion, was justified in the context of this opera. Because we really enjoyed and recommend! “
Musicologist Valdis Muktupāvels also agrees: “One could admire the soloists, who actually sang the instrumental one, but sang it! , it’s a tension too, somehow it resolved beautifully. “
Music critic Inese Lūsiņa is glad that there is such a happy, colorful, bright, and visually bright production: “In this gloomy and indefinite time for all of us, there was a great lack of performances that increase the joy of life and provide good entertainment with good morals. “
In December, “Cinderella” will be played at the Latvian National Opera and Ballet for three more evenings.
