The state’s highest court ruled before Christmas that Trump cannot stand in the nomination election. They pointed to his role in storming Congress in 2021 and a constitutional amendment that says anyone who has participated in sedition cannot seek public office.
The ruling to ban Trump only applied to the nomination election. Colorado is traditionally considered a safe state for the Democrats, so a ban from the actual presidential election in November would probably have limited practical significance.
In several other states there are also cases underway with attempts to prevent the former president from taking part in this year’s elections. Some cases have been dismissed, while Maine has followed the same path as Colorado.
The Colorado Supreme Court said its ruling would not take effect until Jan. 4 at the earliest or after the state’s highest court has reviewed the case.
