Statins are said to have many useful properties that go beyond lowering LDL cholesterol. Observational studies indicate that people who take statins are less likely to develop prostate cancer and live longer than people who do not take statins after breast, colon, kidney or lung cancer diagnosis. A potentially preventive effect could be explained by the fact that the need for cholesterol in proliferative diseases such as cancer is increased.
