From the installation of an experimental one-way street in a part of rue Gilet, a wind of foliage blows in the Village. Explanations.
Next autumn, rue Gilet, the main artery of what the Columérins still call the Village, will be completely renovated. This vast project for the redevelopment and redevelopment of public spaces will benefit from a budget of € 4.5 million. A nice sum to redo the streets, public lighting, accessibility and beautify the neighborhood.
Pending the start of construction, in a year’s time, a one-way street is tested for a month in one part of rue Gilet, between place de la Bascule and rue Chrestias on one side and rue du Lot on the other. Made of red and white plastic terminals, it prohibits turning right, by car, on the Place de Bascule in the direction of the church. A detour has been prepared for rue Chrestias.
The desire of the city hall, Toulouse Métropole and the Dessein de ville agency is to calm car traffic and improve the quality of movement for pedestrians and cyclists. A reflection is also made to integrate short stops so that motorists park time to race in a sector of the city where commercial attractiveness needs to be strengthened.
The fear of traders
However, some residents and traders do not see this change, even an experimental one, in a good light.
“Of course it is desirable to renovate and embellish rue Gilet with adequate pavements, traffic controlled by trays, but the maintenance of two-way traffic is necessary for the survival of the shops”, estimates Marie-France Dupré, pharmacist and new president of the trade association of the village of Colomiers. “We don’t want to see our village die”. A Village, among other things, which no longer keeps the shops that close one after the other to move from time to time to the Plein Center.
To calm the discontent, the town hall has just changed the direction of traffic on rue du Lot so that motorists coming from the Sainte-Thérèse school can directly access rue Gilet.
Apart from the inhabitants and merchants of the Village, each Columérin will soon be able to express his or her opinion. A survey on the platform will take place from 1 to 31 October bit.ly/ruegilet
