Colombia’s Vaccination Coverage Crisis: Urgent Call to Action from the Attorney General’s Office

The Attorney General’s Office called attention to the lack of vaccination coverage in Colombia and where the goals set for coverage in biologicals for 2023 cannot be met with just a few days left until the end of the year.

After the monitoring carried out at the end of October 2023, the control entity assured that only 71% of the population of 612,970 boys and girls under 1 year of age have received the BCG (Tuberculosis) vaccine and 75% the dose of pentavalent, which protects against 5 diseases: diphtheria, whooping cough, tetanus, influenza type b Hepatitis B. Regarding the one-year-old population (634,447), only 77% have been vaccinated against measles and 70% have received the pentavalent vaccine one year after the third dose.

By the age of 18 months, 69% have received the measles dose. In 5-year-old boys and girls, it is recorded that of a total population of 693,887, only 73% have received the DPT vaccine that protects against diphtheria, whooping cough and tetanus.

“In none of the population groups under one year old and up to 5 years old was the coverage achieved in the expanded immunization plan,” said the Delegate Attorney for the Defense of the Rights of Children, Adolescents, the Family and Women, Viviana Mora Verbel.

The most worrying panorama is in departments such as Cundinamarca and Valle del Cauca, where according to the Public Ministry, the premise was to reach 79% of Tuberculosis vaccination, but they do not exceed 41%. And not to mention Vaupés and Vichada, where they are below 40% in measles (SRP) in boys and girls of 18 months and 5 years of age. Also read: Rodrigo Romero fined for driving while intoxicated

Faced with this, the Attorney General’s Office made an urgent call to all competent entities and institutions to reinforce actions to allow complete vaccination coverage.

“The call to current leaders to take urgent measures and to incoming leaders to prioritize strategies and actions in their development plans that guarantee children and the effective right to health,” added Mora Verbel.
