In the last hours, a group of Colombian friends related how they were victims of an act of racism, while they were in Staten Island, in New York. As they commented, before the microphones of RCN Radio, the violence exerted on them, on the part of the women who perpetrated the attack, it would have happened because they were speaking in Spanish. In addition to the verbal attacks, the Colombians were victims of beatings. The outrage caused by the discrimination lies not only in this, but in that, in turn, the children who were with them were attacked in the same way.
César Urrego, one of the citizens who claimed to have been attacked by American women, told the station that he and his traveling group were waiting for a bus, right in front of the exit door of the Burlington store located on Staten Island. While they were chatting at the whereabouts of the public transport they were waiting, a car with two women on board stopped near them.
One of the women who was with César alerted her son to get on the platform because, apparently, the car in which the two North Americans were coming needed to park right in front of the whereabouts. There, at that moment, says César, the exchange of allegations was unleashed.
When the Colombian woman asked the minor to move away from the road to make way for the car, the American woman, who was driving, asked him, in an aggressive manner, not to speak Spanish. “Do not speak in Spanish, Latin dog,” says César about what the American said. Immediately after the verbal attack, the citizen says, the woman gets out of the car and begins to physically attack them. With the same demands regarding the use of English in the United States, the woman approaches and initially hits the child’s mother.
My friend’s husband defends her by protecting her, and they attack me because I used my cell phone to record the event, hitting and scratching me “said César for RCN Radio. The xenophobic attack, said the Colombian, would have been recorded in a video of about 20 minutes, for which, he assured, they have evidence to take legal action against the aggressors women.
In contrast to that case, another group of Colombians in New York made the news, but in their case, due to a positive situation. These days, lhe inhabitants of the United States are experiencing difficult times due to the arrival of Hurricane ‘Ida’. The floods are constant, as are the strong winds that have left multiple material damage in their wake. According to international media, more than 50 people have died in the United States as a result of the ravages of the aforementioned climate phenomenon. In New York, to date, 17 deaths have been reported.
“We are experiencing a historic meteorological event with record-breaking rains throughout the city, with brutal flooding and dangerous road conditions,” commented Bill de Blasio, mayor of the city.
In the midst of this complex situation, a video, in which two Colombians are protagonists, revealed what some web portals described as an act of humanity. In the audiovisual record, it is seen how both citizens move the car in which they are going to help mobilize another that, due to the invisibility of the road, is trapped. Although the outcome of the video is not seen, it is possible to see how the stuck car manages to move a few centimeters.
