It sounded incredible but true: as could be seen in so many publications on social networks, and later confirmed beyond virtuality, the numbers of people dedicated to book reviews, the numbers of reading clubs that met in the name of books, grew daily. of the love for stories, and the number of bookstores – which resisted as cultural centers – in several cities in Colombia. Everything indicated that voice to voice, which is usually the secret of success, was not only multiplying on the platforms these days, but was also giving back to the act of reading its nature of liberation and consolation.
The study ‘Reading habits, library attendance and book purchasing 2023’, carried out by the Colombian Book Chamber and Invamer, proves that the growth of reading in our country is not a desire or a suspicion, but a reality . Colombian readers, that is, citizens who define themselves, in the survey of 1,536 people, as women and men who read, have gone from reading 5.41 to reading 6.91 books per year. In the presentation of the research, the president of the Book Chamber, Emiro Aristizábal, noted that 45 percent of those surveyed are reading more since the days of the pandemic and that 62 percent do so for pleasure.
These are not minor data in times when there is increasing emphasis on mental health care. These are not negligible figures in these days of reels and series recommended left and right in which readers have the extra task of separating fake news from true news.
That people are reading more and that readers insist on their love of reading is encouraging. Whoever reads thinks the world twice. He who reads, Hemingway said, knows true loyalty. And reflection and tenacity serve to transform cultures.
